INTRO

The legend lives on, we continue to write history.

A one-of-a-kind leading project in the green heart of Madrid.

One year on since its reopening, Florida Retiro has made its mark as a hub where culture, leisure, performance and gastronomy merge. An oasis at the core of Madrid’s lung, refurbished and decorated by interior designer Pascua Ortega and architecturally developed by Guillermo García-Hoz. Chef Joaquín Felipe is behind the selection of food and drink, the perfect pairing for one of the most iconic spaces in the capital.

Florida Retiro is a unique spot to visit at any time of the day, appealing to everyone thanks to the variety of spaces: the à la carte restaurant El Pabellón, the tapas bar La Galería, the gastronomic market with different food and drink stands Los Kioscos, the spectacular rooftop bar La Terraza and its legendary Sala.

From 23 September onwards, La Sala at Florida Retiro will once again play host to several performances, kicking off with The Look, a dinner show that merges gastronomy and a magnificent performance by the company Yllana, offering special evening plans.

HISTORY

The origins of Florida Retiro date back to the 17th century, when it first served as a watermill. Its past has always been linked to Retiro Park as the central character of and witness to some of the most relevant historical events.

In terms of architecture, the new Florida Retiro preserves both its emblematic dome and the façade of the “Casa del Contrabandista”, one of King Fernando VII’s self-indulgent impulses that was built in 1814 by architect Isidro González Velázquez. The restoration project of the venue has respected the historical building and preserved a segment of the great “waterwheel of blood” (animal-driven watermill) in an extraordinary landscape covering 125 hectares and surrounded by over 15,000 trees.

For a long time Florida Retiro was also an oxygen therapy spa that was frequented by the bourgeoisie seeking vaporised waters to improve their health, before being transformed into a tearoom and meeting hub for the people of Madrid.

Lastly, under the newly christened name of Florida Park the legendary venue began to forge its most recent history, when Serrat was one of its managers and Antonio Gala had his own spot. Some of its regulars included Lola Flores, Rocío Jurado, Julio Iglesias, as well as a young newcomer, Miguel Bosé.
